Title: Hollywood Actress
Platform: Gun Control
Style: Strong, bellowing voice full of conviction; biblical in nature.
Persuasive Tactics: Portrays the gunman as an outsider welcomed by the church who stole their lives. She calls out each of the victims names – one after the other – asking at the end, “You say their names but that is not enough, is it?” Turning grief into action is a repetitive theme throughout the convention.
Take Home Message: Our souls are on fire. Charleston’s soul is on fire; enough so that it brought down the Confederate flag.
Felicia Sanders and Polly Sheppard
Title: Two of the three survivors of the Mother Emanuel Church shooting in Charleston, SC.
Platform: Gun Violence
Style: Resolve, hope, two pillars of strength with a message to share.
Persuasive Tactics: Opens with son’s last words: “We mean you no harm.” Followed by the refusal to let hate destroy them, coupled by a plea to forgive in order to heal. Portrays gunman as having too much hatred in his heart while reaffirming through scripture quotes that love never fails us. Aligns this sense of love with our civic duty to vote for Hilary Clinton.
Take Home Message: No one should feel what I’ve seen. No one should feel how we feel.
Mark Kelly and Gabrielle Giffords
Title: Retired American astronaut, engineer and U.S. Navy Captain / U. S. Representative, AZ 8th District
Platform: Gun Violence
Style: Mark’s approach is weighted, steadfast, tried and true. Gabby, on the other hand, is very animated, speaking to us at times as if we are children getting ready for a big game; the national cheerleader.
Persuasive Tactics: Mark opens by establishing himself as an expert: a former US representative, veteran involved in 39 combat missions, a former NASA astronaut who flew 4 missions. These experiences give him a unique perspective on America. He has seen it at its best and its worst; identifying Hilary as the next Commander-in-Chief ready to fight our country’s greatest moral failure – gun violence. Gabby reaffirms his sentiment: “Strong women get things done.”
Take Home Message: “I want to say these two words, ‘Madame President!'”
Relevant Backstory: “On January 8, 2011, U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and eighteen others were shot during a constituent meeting held in a supermarket parking lot in Casas Adobes, Arizona. Giffords was holding the meeting, called “Congress on Your Corner” in the parking lot of a Safeway store when Jared Lee Loughner drew a pistol and shot her in the head before proceeding to fire on other people.” [Excerpts taken from Wikipedia article]

Persuasive Tactics: Endorses Tim Kane as a southern gentleman whose rise to power has not changed his civic sense of purpose.
Take Home Message: Tim Kane is an honorable man.
God Bless America,
